Showing the Uncertainty Is the Feature

It's tempting to give people what they want: a clean answer.

"Based on your data, increase by 12.5 µg."

We don't do that. Instead we show a range, sometimes a wide one. This frustrates some users at first. We think it's one of the most important things the tool does.

Precision is often a lie

Levothyroxine pharmacokinetics are noisy in real humans. Absorption varies. Lab timing matters. Adherence isn't perfect. Other medications and health events interfere. A model that pretends it can output a single "correct" weekly dose adjustment is either very sophisticated or very dishonest.

We chose the honest path.

When you run a projection in myTSH, you see a central estimate and the spread around it. That spread is not a bug or a missing feature. It is information.

What the range actually communicates

A narrow band says: "Given everything we can see in your history, the data is relatively consistent."

A wide band says: "There is real variability here. Any single number would be misleading."

Both are useful. The wide band in particular is protective. It makes it harder for someone to walk away thinking "the app told me to change my dose by exactly X."

It also trains better intuition over time. People who regularly look at these ranges start to develop a feel for how much uncertainty actually exists in thyroid data. That intuition is more valuable than any one recommendation.

The cost of being precise

Many tools optimize for the feeling of certainty. They give you a number, a color, a "score." It feels actionable. It also creates a false sense of control.

We are comfortable looking less smart in exchange for being less dangerous.

This is why the disclaimers on every surface are written the way they are. The uncertainty bands are the visual version of those disclaimers. They are the product refusing to overstep.

If a forecast ever feels too confident, that is a signal that either the model needs work or the user should treat the output with extra caution. We would rather surface that tension than hide it behind a single reassuring number.
